Elizabeth will be taking her last service in Marlow at 10.30 am on Sunday 29th May in All Saints Marlow. This will be the only service that day so do come along and give thanks for Liz's time in Marlow and wish her well as she completes her studies and starts her new role as chaplain and fellow of St John's College Oxford.

Announcement from Elizabeth McFarlane, published on 1st May 2011

I shall be leaving Marlow at the end of May, having last Wednesday (27th April) been elected as chaplain and fellow of St John’s College, Oxford.

The deanery is ready and prepared to help the team with the extra work on my departure, and I plan to complete my doctoral thesis over the summer before taking up my new post in the autumn.

There will be plenty of time for goodbyes in the coming month, but at this point I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement over the last four and a half years.

Please come to the joint team service on 29th May, (further details to follow) at which I shall preside for the last time in the parish.

I'm sorry that this has been embargoed so long, but the election could only take place at the governing body meeting, and the college has been on Easter vacation.

We offer Elizabeth our prayers and best wishes in her new appointment. We thank God for her ministry here and the lives she's touched. We trust that her new role will use and develop her God-given gifts yet further.

We are sad to see Elizabeth depart at this moment in our shared life. Nonetheless, we are confident that God will provide as we face an additional vacancy amongst our clergy team.

We only have a few weeks before Elizabeth leaves. Please be comforted to know, therefore, that there has already been a range of discussions to plan for ministry in Marlow. Today marks a simultaneous public announcement here and at St John's college. The leadership team has begun and will continue to ensure that our Team of churches can be held together and find new ways of flourishing.

The Bishop, Archdeacon and Rural Dean all offer their commitment to support us in our shared life and ministry. The Archdeacon's words read as follows
“the diocese and deanery are committed to supporting us during both vacancies, particularly with regard to the provision of clergy cover. Obviously this won't be the equivalent of two full-time clergy, but will hopefully enable us to continue to provide for worship over the period of vacancy.”

We shall publish as much information as possible as soon as possible, so we are all in tune with our plans for ministry and our progress in making new appointments. In the meantime, please join us on May 29th as we say our farewells and pray Elizabeth on her way.

There will be a Watch in All Saints' Marlow from 6, with a Solemn Liturgy Eucharist at 9.30.

There will be Messy Church for our younger members in ASM from 10 to 11, we then encourage everyone to go across to the park and join the Open Air Churches Together in Marlow Service at 11.30.

If getting messy does not appeal do come and join the CTM service at 10.00 at the United Reform Church, Oxford Rd (near Claytons), followed by the Walk of Witness at 11.00 when we walk a cross down the High St, ending in the park for the service.

Then back to ASM for a meditation between 12 and 3 - you can come and go from this event.

Services for Holy Week - Maundy Thursday

This year people are invited to open their homes to their neighbours in Christ to share a simple symbolic meal at 7pm before we gather at All Saints Marlow at 9pm for the final stage of our agape meal.

Following this there is an invitation to join a prayer vigil until midnight.

Biblefresh Festival: Saturday 12th February, High Wycombe

2011 will mark the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Version of the Bible. For four hundred years, the King James Version has been the most familiar and widely read Bible translation in the world, recognised for centuries as both a religious and literary classic. Published in 1611, it was not, as is commonly quoted, the first Bible to be published in English, but has had the most profound impact upon English culture, with its language an inspiration for virtually every great writer since the seventeenth century. Four hundred years later, the year 2011 presents the Church with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and rediscover the Bible.

To celebrate this anniversary, there will be a Biblefresh Festival on Saturday 12th February from 10.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. at All Saints Parish Church, High Wycombe HP11 2BN. The Keynote speaker will be: Rev. Alison Tomlin (President of the Methodist Conference) and there will be a range of workshops, illustrating the ways in which people engage with Scripture, including alternative approaches to Bible study, Godly Play, Bibliodrama and a labyrinth (not to mention music, banner-making and an interactive IT Psalm). Admission is free.

Clem Virgo, Director of Music's last services

Many of you know that Clem Virgo is retiring in September this year after 45 years of unstinting service to the church and the community in Marlow and beyond.

Clem intends that the services on Sunday 26th September 2010 will be his last as Director of Music. The men will join the mixed voice choir at the morning Sung Eucharist and also sing with the boys and girls choir at Choral Evensong.

Clearly this occasion should be marked in an appropriate manner, therefore we would like to invite you to attend Evensong and to refreshments in the Church Hall after the service. The current choir members will act as ‘hosts’ for this occasion.

In order that we can organise the catering, please can you let Mavis Simpson know by Sept 12th if you can attend this event.

Encounter is having it's summer holiday so on the 1st and 3rd Sunday we will meet in the park in Marlow - weather willing! - between the river and Sir Steve Redgraves statue. It's very informal - a bible reading, some prayers, bearing witness - and sharing a picnic so pack your chairs and your sarnies and come on down at 11.30.

If the British Summer is taking place and it's raining we will meet in the Church Hall and have indoor picnics!

World Cup Playing & Praying

Archdeacon Karen is doing something different during the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa during the 25 days of the tournament, starting on the kick off date – June 11th..

She will be using her blog each day of World Cup play to help us pray for an aspect of life in Kimberley and Kuruman. As it is a blog it will be her own reflections, using various material (and photos), however any prayer requests over the period would be gratefully received.

They witnessed first hand work being supported by our parishes including a project to help villages create their own vegetable gardens, a shelter for domestic violence victims and in one village, she met the youth football team.

There are so many good things to do. So many good causes to join. But while we’re busy doing all these good things, are we missing out on something great? Maybe saying no would be easier if we knew what it meant to say yes.

And that is the topic of 'Shells', the next Nooma video/discussion, this Sunday May 30th at 11.30 in the Church (please note venue). Do come along and join this informal meeting, healthy debate in small groups is to be encouraged!

Based on the 2 Corinthians 'Serving from the Heart Learning Series, the topic will be Messengers of Reconciliation.

Flower Festival

This exciting new event will take place in the church on the Regatta weekend, 12 and 13 June - to raise funds for the Youth Worker Project.

The theme is 'The River from Source to Sea' and there has been huge interest from local flower arranging circles with all the placements taken (all 37 of them).

The church will be filled with flowers and floral interpretations of themes and will be well worth a visit, especially as all money raised will be helping the youth worker project.

There is a preview evening on Friday 11th June, 7 - 9pm, tickets £6 to include wine and nibbles. Tickets available from the parish office, then the church will be open Sat and Sun, £2.50 admission on the door.

....to everyone who helped out before, during or after the youth events on Friday 23rd. Anyone attending Great Marlow School or Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School might have noticed some unusual and loud lessons going on! The Youth Project in partnership with Marlow Christian Fellowship, River Church and the Luis Palau Association arranged the visit of two bands, the Steels (at GMS) and LZ7 (at SWB). A range of PHSE and RE lessons took place throughout the day with lunchtime concerts also being given by both bands. The bands went on to perform full sets at an evening concert at Foxes Piece School later that evening.

Visiting American speaker Andrew Palau also took part and shared a ‘message of hope’ at the main events later that day. Five young people responded on the night to the gospel message. Please pray for them!

The opportunity to work this way with a team of local youth workers and others allows us to plan bigger events and work together in a way to complement and coordinate the work we are all doing in our local communities. Other events organised by the local team include ‘Ignite!’ – fresh and relevant worship services for and by young people. The next one of these will be at Marlow Christian Fellowship, Foxes Piece School on May 16th 7:00 - 9:30pm.

New Team Vicar announced

The Revd Paul Hinckley has been offered the post of Team Vicar, which he has accepted.

Paul was born in Marlow, but has since lived in many different places. His college days and early career were spent in design and safety engineering for aircraft and submarines, before he responded to God's call to ordained ministry. He was made deacon in 1994 and ordained priest 1995.

He has enjoyed the experience of belonging to both traditional and emerging churches since becoming a Christian in his teenage years. He has been involved in a wide range of activities that have brought the gospel and the church to life in fresh ways. He is currently a vicar in Yateley, Hampshire, bringing a strong emphasis on developing lay ministry and a commitment to creative outreach and fresh expressions of church. He is looking forward to building on the foundations set in place in Encounter, and helping all of us in the Team Ministry to be a community of people for whom church is much "More than Sunday".

Plans are going ahead for Paul’s licensing in mid-September before which he’ll be making another big change in his life - getting married to Julie shortly before he joins our Team. Paul and Julie are very much looking forward to making their new home together with us in Marlow.

Please pray for Paul as he says farewell to the people of Yateley, and for Paul and Julie as they make their final plans for their wedding and their move to Marlow.

We start a new learning series at Encounter this Sunday, based on Corinthians 2.

Pauls writings show us a way to Jesus-like living, to align our hearts and lives with the way of God and offer authentic love, amazing grace, extravagent genorosity and humble spirit. As we do this we are shaped into the image of the One who served us so hard he ended up on a cross.

We have some exciting speakers in May, starting off with Bishop Alan on the subject of being a messenger of reconciliation and on May 16, Archdeacon Karen preaching on Gracious Generosity. Put the dates in your diary now!

Womens World Day of Prayer: Friday 5th March

On Friday 5th March over 3 million people worldwide will be praying and worshipping together usinga service prepared by the Christian women of Cameroon. Since the 19th century this day been held, organised and led by Christian women, written by a different country each year and that country becomes the focus for a day of prayer, starting in Tonga as day breaks and continues across the world, ending in Samoa, circling the world in prayer for 36 hours.

2010 Lent Course

The 2010 Lent course will be themed around Jesus the Jew, and will look at how the gospels have shaped Christian (mis)understandings of the context of his life and ministry.

The Lent Course will run in two groups, one in the morning, and one in the evening on Tuesdays from 23rd February to 23rd March inclusive. The location for the morning group will depend upon numbers, and the evening group will meet at All Saints’ Marlow Parish Hall, in the upper room. We have two special speakers for the evening sessions, Professor Norman Solomon and Rabbi Markus Lange.

Four Creative Workshops will be held this year: Wednesday 10th March, 12th May, 8th September and 10th November, all in the Church Hall from 2.00 - 6.00 p.m.

The first workshop is being led by Anna Payne, an artist from Little Marlow. - see her work to the right. The topic is Plants and the Symbolic Nature of Gardens: A Drawing & Painting workshop.

The second workshop is being led by Toddy Hoare, a sculptor (and Anglican priest) who will demonstrate his methods of sculpting. More of his work can be seen on http://www.axisweb.org/ under Toddy Hoare.

The third workshop is to be led by Helen Munday who is going to demonstrate felt making.

The fourth workshop will be led by Linda Scott on mixed media sculpture.

The week of Jan 18 to 24 is the week of prayer for Christian Unity, supported by Churches Together in Marlow.

There will be three prayer services on Monday 18, Weds 20 and Thurs 21, all at 12.30 and in the Methodist chapel. Each day will be led by a different church leader - Mike Wilkinson from Marlow Christian Fellowship, Pete Davies from River Church and David Miler from Marlow Methodists.

On Friday 22nd at 7.30 there will be a special service of Healing and Reconciliation at All Saints Marlow, where you can receive an individual laying on of hands, a wonderful service of calm and peace at the end of the week.

On Sunday 24th at 6.45 pm there will be a United Service at the Marlow Methodist chapel, to give praise for unity across churches in Marlow.

The Crypt Open Day

We will be holding the Crypt “open day” next Saturday 5th December from 12.00 – 2.00 p.m. This will be quite a low key event as there is still some work to do before the Crypt is ready – Anne is doing a brilliant job in pulling this together but it is a big project and is taking a little longer than we originally planned. It has been decided that we should not unpack all the furniture until all of the work is completed as it will create a lot of dust. However we will have a few chairs unpacked and Stewart is planning to have the table football up and running! It will be a good opportunity to tell people who do come along of our plans for early next year. It will be lovely to see you there if you have time to pop in.

Fundraising for the Youth Worker steering group

Encounter has been invited to have a representative on the Fundraising for the Youth Worker steering group. The aim of the group is to raise money pledged by the PCC to support the youth worker. The first meeting was held at the beginning of October and the next one will probably be at the beginning of November to finalise the details of the recipe book and late night shopping event. In general most communication will be via email, so not a lot of cttee meetings.

Some of the planning has been done, but generally the roles of team members are to do the planning, guiding and steering and then to promote the fundraising ideas in their own congregations and encourage them to take part.

It is obviously really important that we have somebody to take on this role - all the other congregations are to be represented; if anyone is interested please could they let Sue Morton know (marksuemorton@googlemail.com).

Wycombe Winter Night Shelter

The Wycombe Winter Night Shelter is run by Wycombe Churches with 200+ volunteers from over 50 churches in the area. They join forces over the winter months to provide homeless people with a roof, acceptance, companionship, two meals and a warm bed each evening as well as ongoing help towards finding more permanent accommodation and resolving some of their individual problems – God’s love in action…….

The Wycombe Winter Night Shelter will be open from 4th January 2010 to 31 March 2010

As part of the Youth Worker initiative the PCC has inaugurated a Fundraising committee to raise £20,000 in three years. A daunting task!
We want to use skills from across the parish to work together to raise the money. Aiming always to appeal to the community at large, our first ‘event’ will be to produce a cookbook of Marlow’s Best Winter Recipes, with the chapter headings: Starters, Main Courses (meat and fish dishes), Desserts, Cakes and Biscuits and maybe in the run up to Christmas – Festive Food. The book will be on sale at the Late Night Shopping Event, together with snacks, soups, cakes, biscuits etc, taken from the book.

Get on Your Bike!

Time to dust off your cycle shorts and join the Historic Churches Sponsored Cycle Ride. It’s on 12th September between 10.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. and the object is to raise money for the repair and restoration of churches and chapels of any denomination. Half the money raised goes to the church or chapel of the participant's choice, and the other half to a general fund administered by the Buckinghamshire (Bucks.) Historic Churches Trust, to which applications may be made for grants.

No worries if you do not own a bike as it is open to it is open to walkers as well as horse riders - in fact anyone using a non-mechanised form of transport.

You decide your own route based on which churches in the county will be open (most of them) and then get everyone you know to sponsor you, raise cash for the church, get out in the fresh air, get fit AND enjoy the company of friends. What's stopping you??

Hope In The Park 2009 - SUNDAY MAY 17

After the fantastic success of the event in the park in May last year….we are going to do it all again! Sunday May 17th, put the date in your diaries now!
Starting at 9.30 there will be a Treasure Hunt for children, bungee run, Superslide, the Hope double decker bus, Katy Kartwheel Circus Skills.....
The service will start at 11.30, worship will be led by John Rumble who many will know from Lighthouse and the speaker will be the Rev Dr Joel Edwards from the Eveangelical Alliance, the largest evangelical umbrella group in the country.
From 12.45 there will be a Hog Roast, burgers, sausages, vegetarian burgers and a musical background including Tina Oldham who gave a wonderful performance last year.
From 2.00 the local primary schools will be performing songs, interspersed with other entertainment and a finale from Roly Bain - vicar and clown.
Add to that craft stalls, a book stall, loads of information about all the events the churches in Marlow have coming up, prayer events and even more activities for children.... come along and join in this fabulous act of worship as we build on our unity and reach out together to share Jesus with our town.

What’s up with the word “love”? It doesn’t have much meaning when we use it loosely. Maybe we don’t really get it. Maybe we don’t understand what real love is. What it involves to really love somebody. What it means to give yourself to someone else. We mistake things like friendship, commitment, or lust for love, but God wired us a certain way to experience all that love was really meant to be. Not to hold us back or to make us miss out on the best that life has to offer. God created love, and wants us to feel it all in the way it’s meant to be felt.

Encounter Sunday 18 January AND coffee!

This coming Sunday we will be gathering in the church hall for our Encounter service. One of our new year resolutions is to start the service promptly at 1130h. As part of that we'd like to explore, during this quarter, overlapping with the 9.30 congregation for coffee before our service. Christmas is here!

Following on from a really successful Christmas Dinner Party at which 50 Encounter friends gathered (thanks to Sue's CG for organising it!) we are now getting ready for Christmas!
The service on Sunday 21 December will be looking at "God's New Home on Earth". We will gather in the church hall at 1130h and will break bread together. All are welcome!
Next week, I'd like to encourage you to join us at any of our Crib Services (24th Dec) at 1500h for the young children and 1700h for the older ones, and on Christmas Day at our special Family Celebration - TGIC (Thank God it's Christmas), at All Saints' Marlow at 1115h. Have a very peaceful and joyful Christmas!

The next Cafe style evening will be on Thursday 6th November from 7-9 in Torellis in the High St.

It will feature the NOOMA material on RICH.

It’s easy for us to fall into a mindset of viewing “our” world as “the” world, because it’s all we generally see. We’re constantly bombarded with images of the latest styles and models of everything, and it can easily leave us feeling like what we have isn’t enough because we see people that have even more than us. But how does what we have compare to what most people in the world have? Maybe what we have is enough; maybe it’s more than enough. Maybe God has blessed us with everything we have so we can bless and give to others.

Perspectives on our attitudes to money and wealth are about as topical as you can get so put the date in your diary and come along, bring friends, a lively debate is promised!

NOOMA is a new format for getting Christian perspectives, touching on issues that we care about, that we want to talk about and it comes in a way that fits our world.
